What this is shaping up to be is a much-welcomed return to form for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. The Call of Duty series has been a 'boots on the ground' First Person Shooter for most of the series up until Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, produced by Sledge Hammer Games. If you're new to Call of Duty in the advanced movement era, this will come as a bit of a shock to the system. Most importantly it's clear, finally, that Activision has been listening to the community. This 'boots on the ground' concept cooked up by CoD players just isn't making any sense to me because from what I've seen in the new trailer it looks like you'll be fighting as infantry 95 of the time. Lighting up the trenches won't get old in a hurry. Boots on the ground is a term (Look it up if you have to) used to confirm that infantry units have reached a destination or target and are engaged in a combat situation. They capture the atmosphere of the historical setting while being balanced and engaging. The maps we've seen so far are excellent, too. There is more reward based on skill, not just being able to slide around with two shotguns in your hand one-shotting everyone. I wrote a while ago as to why you should fire up Black Ops 2 on backwards compatibility, and some of that has been brought back to life in WWII. Sledgehammer Games announced features such as the new headquarters social space, divisions, war mode and the return to boots-on-the-ground gameplay.

There are issues with the gameplay like those detailed above, but equally, there's no reason things won't be balanced out come launch. as long as cod has the shitty servers and engine we have every year, cod can only stay boots on the ground. It isn't perfect, though since it's currently only a beta we'll let any obvious performance bugs slide. It'll be nice to see players who have better in game knowledge to reign supreme again. WWII rewards gun skill and - assuming you're playing properly - strategy.

I had fun in Black Ops 3, and most of the time in Infinite Warfare even, but it's incredibly refreshing to return to the world where you aren't worried about an opponent running along the wall over you. As a Call of Duty fan, I'm very happy with the decision to take the franchise back to its roots.
